Celebrated 5-star Serbian chef hails Ugandan avocado as best in the world

A celebrated 5-star Chef in Serbia has hailed Ugandan avocado as the most delicious in the world.

This came on the sidelines as President Yoweri Museveni opened the Uganda Connect Trade Hub in Belgrade, Serbia on July 31.

According to Odrek Rwabwogo, the chairman of Presidential Committee on Export and Industrial Development (PACEID), Chef Phillipe praised Uganda’s avocado is the best he had ever tasted.

“Thrilled to hear Chef Phillipe, a 5-star chef, praising our Avocado as the best he’s ever tasted. At the Uganda Trade Hub, we are privileged to have him on board, exploring innovative avenues to introduce delicious Ugandan food to the Serbian market,” Rwabwogo said.

Rwabwogo, who birthed the idea of the Uganda Connect Trade Hub in Belgrade, said Chef Philip further inspired him through his recipe of avocado and matooke.

“When I finally saw Chef Phillipe, the celebrated Michelin recommended five-star chef of the Balkans, in the Hub making a recipe out of the big Ugandan avocados and matooke, I was thankful that a small idea can take root when well-led,” Rwabwogo further said.

Uganda is currently promoting the growing of Hass Avocado, with statistics indicating the country exported as much as 469 tonnes in 2020.

Formers are also embracing avocado growing due to the growing export market.

Richard Canichan, an avocado farmer in Zombo district, told local media a year ago that in two months he planted 200 Hass avocado trees mainly motivated by the export market.

Hass avocado farming was introduced in Uganda in 2013 when the country exported slightly over four tonnes of avocados, according to the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade).

“In 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries launched a nationwide avocado-growing campaign to promote Hass avocado production,” local media reported.

“Globally, the main end markets for Hass avocados are France and the United Kingdom, with the Netherlands and Scandinavian nations exhibiting the highest per capita consumption. According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hass avocados typically reach maturity after two years and a single mature tree can yield more than 3,000 fruits (500kg) under proper agronomic management practices,” local media reported in 2021.
