Uganda’s international tourism recovers 82% of pre-pandemic levels

Uganda says its international tourism has recovered at least 82.6% of the pre-pandemic levels, a latest report indicates.

A report launched  by the ministry of tourism, wildlife and antiquities also indicates that the country’s arrivals grew 56.6% from the previous year.

“International tourism in Uganda recovered 82.6% of the pre-pandemic levels (- 17.4% versus pre-pandemic year 2019),” the report said.

“International tourist arrivals reached 1,274,210 visitors in 2023, up 56.5 percent from 2022 (814,508) and is expected to exceed 1.5 million by end of 2024,” the report added.

According to the report receipts gathered from International tourists increased from US$0.736 billion in 2022 to US$1.025 billion in 2023.

“The International tourist receipts grew by 48.5% and are about 83% of the US$ 1.2 billion recorded in 2019,” the report noted.

“The top overseas five source markets in Uganda were India, USA, UK, China and Germany. Asia and Africa recorded the best results, with arrivals 79% and 9% respectively above pre-pandemic levels,” the report noted.

Tom Butiime, the minister for tourism, wildlife and antiquities, said the report was important because it directs the country on how to proceed. “People from banks now know that if clients come for money, it is important because there is business,” Butime said.

The minister revealed that there were plans to build another international airport in northeastern Uganda so that visitors can fly directly from their countries straight into Kidepo National Park.

The minister attributed the positive strides to the prevailing peace and good road network.
