The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) have assured participants in the upcoming Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori marathon of security, with thousands of people expected to take part in tomorrow’s event.
A statement from the UPDF on Thursday said people are free to enjoy the marathon as their security is guaranteed.
“The UPDF warmly welcomes runners, visitors and supporters to Kasese for the marathon,” the army stated.
“This year’s event is particularly special, hosting participants from Uganda and 32 other countries. Kasese’s stunning landscape and the majestic Rwenzori Mountains provide a unique setting for the marathon,” the army added.
The UPDF called upon participants for cooperation, adding “If you notice anything suspicious or concerning, please report immediately to the nearest security personnel or UPDF officers who will be stationed throughout the event ready to address any concerns.”
Promoting healthy living, tourism
At least 3,000 international and local runners are expected to take part in the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon.
According to the organisers, the aim is “to create a world-class running event that celebrates the beauty and majesty of the Rwenzori Mountains.”
“Our vision is to promote healthy living, boost tourism to the region, and support local communities through the power of running,” the organisers state on their website.
The event was launched in 2022 with 800 taking part, a number which doubled at the second marathon. Now the organisers say this year more than 3,000 are expected to participate.
“By bringing together local and international runners, we hope to showcase the stunning landscapes of the Rwenzori Mountains and Queen Elizabeth National Park, including its famous glaciers, towering peaks, lush forests and expansive savannah,” the organisers explained.
“Our ultimate goal is to make the Rwenzori Marathon a must-attend event for runners and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world.”
They also believe that the marathon will importantly “create a lasting impact on the region, supporting local communities and promoting sustainable development.”
“We believe that the Rwenzori Marathon has the potential to be a driving force for positive change, and we invite you to join us on this journey!”
The prize money for this year’s marathon will be distributed among the top finishers in each category as follows:
Men’s 42km: shs10 million for the winner, with cash prizes for the top 6 finishers.
Ladies’ 42km: shs10 million for the winner, with cash prizes for the top 6 finishers.
Men’s 21km: shs7 million for the winner, with cash prizes for the top 5 finishers.
Ladies’ 21km: shs7 million for the winner, with cash prizes for the top 5 finishers.
This will be in addition to special cash prizes which will be given to the” best local talent from the Rwenzori region and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), further emphasizing the marathon’s commitment to inclusivity and community support.”
And that is not all, marathon participants will receive a 50% discount on entry fees for persons and vehicles to Queen Elizabeth National Park from August 23-25, 2024, upon presentation of their race bibs.
“This exclusive offer allows runners to extend their adventure and explore the park’s stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife at a reduced cost,” the park noted.
RULES FOR THE PARTICIPANTS
Participants of the full and half marathon (42km & 21km) must be over 18 years of age.
Participants in the Family Fun Run (5k) and 10 km under the age of 18 years must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult.
Participants must be in good health and physically prepared to take on the challenge of the race for which they are entered.
Pet animals, whether on a leash or not, are not allowed on the course.
Participants are obliged to follow the instructions of stewards, run officials or Uganda traffic police at all times.
The organisers reserve the right of admission and to use the participant’s pictures, recordings or any other records obtained for any legitimate purposes, including commercial advertising by sponsors of the event.
